Respire Timepiece Ideation

One breath at a time...
I'm thinking about how to make a timepiece.  Something that's connected to breath and movement, time and rhythm.  Some kind of beautiful, nostalgic oddity that could sit comfortably in a cabinet des curiosites.   During this ideation process, I keep returning to the lung as a literal symbol of breathing and the images of lungs that seem so delicate and enduring all at once, like intricate root systems or dried coral.  I'd like to preserve this quality of fragility and strength in the timepieces I design, using parishable materials like wax, plants, glass and paper.  I'm thinking the scale of each timepiece will be rather small-- but placed together in a shadow box of some sort.  Time keeping will translate through objects like the hourglass, sundial, thaumatrope, terrarium and candle.

Respire Retail Materials Board

Again with the collage!  This poster is my design proposal for "Respire", a high-end coat and scarf boutique.  Basically, I'm trying to convey the store's material make-up and physical layout in a manner more focused than the previous collage.  This is where ideation moves towards realization and conceptual ideas transform into surfaces, finishings, furniture, lighting and merchandise.  I've chosen bright citrus hues of color and paired them with glitzy items both old and modern to create a breath of fresh design within a retail context.  Mirrored surfaces, wire mannequins, rays of light (check out a detail of Ricardo Garza Marcos' light cubes here) and structural pass-through panels all add to the sense that this is an environment where breath moves freely.  The boutique's sign is based on Kai Lossgott's playful illustration appropriately titled "Breathing".

Respire Retail Collage

Someone once told me, "when it comes to spreading ideas, collage is contagious".  So here goes...
This particular collage is a collection of initial inspirations for a high-end boutique specializing in women's scarves and coats.  The boutique's concept is respire, which I am attempting to look at through a French lens, which could go beyond breathing to mean inhaling and exuding.  From here, I began to play connect the thoughts:  Respire... wind blown scarves... kufiyas... Parisian chic... tailored coats... handwriting... And then, aspects of the boutique's physical character began to come into focus starting with the color scheme.  Associating color with respire, I landed on the elegant potted lemon trees brought indoors during the winter months to add color and scent to a gray and dormant season (like a breath of fresh air!).  And so it came to be: Dark brown, yellow, green and white for the lemon tree and black and white for the winter.  At this point, texture and light could be brought into the larger picture, where things such as wire armature connect well with the ornate ironwork of Parisian balconies, glossy plastic and sculptural surfacing could be a modern nod towards the textile-rich merchandise and pattern emitting lighting adds glitz and interest with relative simplicity.
